Selma is a railroad town, laid out around the station in 1867 and chartered in 1873, and the West Selma Historic District alone holds 217 houses from about 1880 to 1961, Queen Anne and Craftsman homes on about ninety acres west of downtown. That is a lot of early-1900s houses in one place, and it is where most of our Selma work is. What we find in them: a 60 or 100 amp service that is full, cloth-insulated and sometimes knob-and-tube wiring still live in the attic, two-prong ungrounded receptacles, and a panel that was replaced once in the 1970s and has known defects today. Inside the town system, your power comes from the Town of Selma's own electric utility, one of North Carolina's public power cities, which serves about 2,650 customers over 65 miles of line from the Electric Department on East Anderson Street. Addresses outside that system are on Duke Energy Progress or a cooperative, and we check which before we quote. It matters on any job that touches the meter: the town books its own disconnects and reconnects and sets its own fees for a meter base and a reconnection, and the Duke Energy Charger Prep Credit for EV charger wiring applies only to Duke Energy customers, so a house on town power does not get it.
