The Right Circuit for the Charger You Bought
Most EV charger questions come down to one decision: hardwired or plug-in. A Tesla Wall Connector hardwired on a 60 amp circuit can deliver up to 48 amps, which is a full overnight charge for anything on the road. A Mobile Connector on a NEMA 14-50 outlet delivers less, is cheaper to install, and moves with you.
Neither is wrong. What is wrong is installing either one without a load calculation first, because a charger is a continuous load and a panel that was nearly full before it is fully spoken for after it.
We install Tesla's Wall Connector and Universal Wall Connector, any UL-listed Level 2 charger you bring us, and 14-50 outlets. The circuit, the permit, the inspection and a charge test before we leave are inside the price.

A Universal Wall Connector does the same for both NACS and J1772 cars. A NEMA 14-50 outlet with a Mobile Connector delivers up to 32 amps, costs less to install and moves with you. Both need a dedicated circuit and a permit; the choice is speed and permanence against cost and portability.

What a 48 Amp Charger Needs From Your Panel
A charger is a continuous load, so a 48 amp Wall Connector needs a 60 amp circuit on a breaker rated for continuous use, and a 14-50 outlet needs a 50 amp circuit. Whether your panel can carry that is a load calculation, which we do before quoting. If the panel is tight, the charger can be set to a lower rate on a smaller circuit, a load-managing charger can share, or a subpanel or service upgrade comes first.

Wall Connector or 14-50 outlet?
Wall Connector if you want the fastest charge and it is staying with the house. 14-50 if you want to keep the cost down or take the charger with you.
Do I need a 60 amp circuit?
For a Wall Connector set to its full 48 amps, yes. It can be set lower on a smaller circuit if the panel is tight.
Can you install a charger I bought online?
Yes, as long as it is UL-listed. The circuit and the permit are the same either way.
Will it need a permit?
Yes, everywhere we work. Included in the price.
Am I eligible for the Duke Energy credit?
Only if Duke Energy supplies your power. Some homes in eastern Wake are on Wake Electric and are not eligible. Check your bill, and see our EV charger page for how the credit works.
Can you install two chargers?
Yes. Two on one circuit with power sharing, or two circuits if the panel allows.

What It Costs
A Level 2 charger installation on a short run from your panel is typically $985, permit included. Across all installs, including long runs and detached garages, the range is $750 to $2,500. If the panel needs more capacity first, the charger plus a complete service upgrade together is typically $4,285, permit included. These figures are estimates from jobs we have done, and the exact price for your house comes from a free on-site estimate, in writing, before any work starts.
