Sparkwise Electrical Inc installs both, whole house standby generators and portable-generator interlock kits, at single-family homes in Raleigh, Zebulon and across Wake, Johnston, Durham, Orange, Harnett, Wilson, Wayne, Nash, Chatham and Franklin counties, and we will tell you plainly which one your situation calls for.
What a generator connection costs with us
There are two common setups. The figures below are typical for the work; the exact price for your house comes from an on-site estimate, free on quoted work.
Portable generator connection: a listed interlock kit fitted to your existing panel, with an outdoor inlet, typically $785 installed. It lets the whole panel run from a portable generator and makes back-feeding the utility line physically impossible.
Standby generator, electrical scope: the pad or mount, the automatic transfer switch, the wiring between the generator and your panel, grounding, the permit and inspection, and commissioning with a live power-cut test, typically $3,985. The generator itself is supplied separately, and the gas connection is made by a licensed gas fitter.
Generator installations include the first year of maintenance at no charge. Every installation is backed by our lifetime warranty on labor and workmanship, plus up to 15 years on materials.

The Standby Generator: Power That Comes Back By Itself
A standby generator, like the Generac Guardian series, sits on a pad beside the house, runs on natural gas or propane, and starts itself when the power drops. The automatic transfer switch moves the house onto generator power in seconds, whether you are home or not. Sizing is a load question, not a brochure question: a smaller unit can carry the essentials, the well pump, the refrigerator, the heat, the medical equipment, while a larger one carries the whole house. The Interlock Kit: The Practical Budget Option
If you already own a portable generator, an interlock kit and an inlet box turn it into a safe whole-panel backup for a fraction of the cost of a standby. When an outage hits, you roll the generator out, plug in one cord, and the interlock lets you power the circuits you choose through the panel itself, with no extension cords through windows and no chance of backfeeding the line while a utility crew is working on it. You start it and fuel it yourself, which is the trade-off, and we say so.

Permits and Utilities, Town by Town
A standby generator or an interlock kit is permitted work, and a standby unit also brings the utility in when the transfer switch goes in beside the meter.
Duke Energy Progress serves most addresses in Zebulon, Wendell, Archer Lodge, Bunn, Garner, Kenly and Raleigh, and asks for 72 hours' notice on a service interruption, weekdays only. Apex, Wake Forest, Clayton, Smithfield, Selma, Wilson and Louisburg own their own electric systems and schedule their own crews. Parts of Knightdale, Rolesville, Youngsville and Wake Forest are on the Wake Electric co-op. We confirm which one owns your meter before we set a date.
On permits: in Zebulon, Wendell, Knightdale and Rolesville the application goes through the Wake County permit portal and Wake County inspects. Wake Forest, Garner and Clayton inspect their own. Johnston County covers Archer Lodge, Smithfield, Selma and Kenly. Nash County covers Middlesex. Franklin County covers Bunn, Youngsville and Louisburg. Wilson and Raleigh inspect inside their own city limits. Archer Lodge, Smithfield, Selma, Middlesex, Bunn and Youngsville also want their own town permit before the county will issue.

How big a generator do I need?
It depends on what you want running: the whole house, or the essentials such as the fridge, the heat, a few lights and the well pump. We size it to what you want, not to the biggest unit on the truck.
Natural gas or propane?
Natural gas if the house has it. Propane if it does not, with a tank sized for the run time you want.
Does it need a permit?
