A hot tub is a 240 volt appliance sitting in a puddle, with people in it. The code for it is stricter than for anything else in the house and it is strict for a reason. Done right, a spa circuit is completely unremarkable for thirty years. Done by the seller's brother-in-law, it is the reason the GFCI trips every time it rains, or worse.
The rules are not complicated. The circuit has to be GFCI protected. There has to be a disconnect the person in the water can see, and it has to be at least five feet from the edge. The metal parts around the tub have to be bonded together. And in almost every jurisdiction we serve, the whole thing is permitted and inspected.
That is the job. We do all of it, every time, and the inspector signs it off before you get in.

What the Code Actually Requires
The circuit has to be GFCI protected. There has to be a disconnect the person in the water can see, at least five feet from the edge. The metal parts around the tub have to be bonded together, the conduit has to be the right type at the right depth where it crosses the yard, the conductors have to match the spa's rating, and no receptacle can sit closer to the water than the code allows. Those are the things the inspector checks, and they are the things we do the way the inspector wants to see them.

Where the Circuit Comes From
Most spas want a 50 or 60 amp 240 volt circuit from the panel, through a GFCI breaker or a spa panel with GFCI built in, to a weatherproof disconnect within sight of the tub. If the panel has the capacity and two free spaces, the circuit comes straight from it. If not, a subpanel is usually the answer, and we price both so you can see the difference. Distance changes the price, not whether it can be done.

We check the panel has room and capacity: Most spas want a 50 or 60 amp circuit. If the panel is full or the service is small, you hear that first, along with the options.

We plan the route: From the panel to the disconnect to the tub. Underground in conduit where it crosses the yard, at the depth the code requires.

Does a hot tub need a permit?
In every jurisdiction we work in, yes. It is included and we handle it.
The tub came with a plug. Can I just plug it in?
Plug-in spas run on 120 volts and heat slowly. Most hardwired 240 volt tubs are a different animal and need a proper circuit.
Why does my GFCI keep tripping?
Water where it should not be, a failing heater element, or a circuit that was never bonded properly. We find which.
How far can the tub be from the panel?
Far. Distance changes the price, not whether it can be done.
