The most common call we get from a house built in the last fifteen years is not a fault. It is a panel with every slot used and a homeowner who wants to add one more thing: a car charger, a workshop, a hot tub, a second oven.
Almost everyone assumes that means a full service upgrade. Usually it does not. A 200 amp service in a modern house has plenty of capacity; what it has run out of is breaker spaces. A subpanel adds the spaces for a fraction of what a new service costs, and it is the right answer far more often than the expensive one.

What a Subpanel Actually Solves
A subpanel adds breaker spaces, not capacity. A 200 amp service in a modern house usually has plenty of capacity; what it has run out of is slots. A subpanel in the garage, the basement or beside a full main panel gives you the spaces for a fraction of what a new service costs, fed by a properly sized feeder with four wires, a separate neutral and ground, and its own ground rod where the building is detached.

Dedicated Circuits, and Why Sharing Is the Problem
A car charger, a hot tub, a range, a dryer, a mini-split or a workshop tool is a large or continuous load, and a large load sharing a circuit with the bedroom lights is why the breaker trips when two things run together. A dedicated circuit gets its own breaker, its own run and its own label in the panel, so the load has the whole circuit to itself and the next person to open the panel knows what it is.

Load calculation before anything: We add up what the house draws and what you are adding. That decides subpanel versus service upgrade, and we show you the arithmetic.

We size the feeder properly: A subpanel is only as good as the feeder to it: right conductor size, four wires with a separate neutral and ground, and a breaker to match.

Frequently Asked Questions
Subpanel or service upgrade?
If the service has capacity and the panel is out of spaces, a subpanel. If the service itself is undersized, an upgrade. The load calculation says which, and we do it before quoting.
Can a subpanel go in a detached garage?
Yes, with a proper feeder and its own ground rod at the garage.
Do I need a dedicated circuit for a car charger?
Yes, always. A Level 2 charger is a continuous load and shares with nothing.
Does adding circuits need a permit?
New circuits do, in every jurisdiction we serve. Included.
How many circuits can you add in one visit?
As many as the panel and the day allow. Doing several at once is far cheaper than one at a time.

What It Costs
A subpanel runs $850 to $2,500, depending on size and how far it is from the main panel. A dedicated circuit runs $450 to $1,500, depending on the amperage and the distance. Both include the permit and inspection where required. These figures are estimates from jobs we have done, and the exact price for your house comes from a free on-site estimate, in writing, before any work starts.
