When Your Panel Stops Keeping Up

A breaker panel quietly decides how much electricity everything else in the house is allowed to have. Most homes in Raleigh, Cary and Clayton built before the mid-1990s were wired for a household that did not own an induction range, a heat pump, a hot tub or an electric car. Add any of those and the panel is usually what has to change first. What a panel upgrade costs with us

You should not have to guess what this job costs. Our pricing is flat rate and in writing before any work starts.

A 200 amp panel replacement is $2,185, and that price includes whole-home surge protection, a $585 value on its own. A complete service upgrade, which covers the meter base, mast, grounding and the new panel together, is $3,285. Permit fees are included in these prices, and we handle the permit and inspection scheduling for you.

How does that compare? Published Raleigh-area figures put a typical 200 amp panel change at $1,275 to $1,950 before permits and before surge protection. Our price includes both, so you are comparing a finished, protected, inspected job against a base figure that grows.

Is the price final? Yes. Flat rate means the price you approve is the price you pay, no matter how long the job takes. Free estimates on quoted work. 5% off for first responders, military and teachers.

What backs the work? A lifetime warranty on labor and workmanship, plus up to 15 years on materials, in writing before we start.

Signs the Panel Is the Problem

Breakers that trip when two appliances run at once, lights that dim when the air handler starts, a panel that feels warm to the touch, a burning smell near the box, scorch marks around a breaker, or rust anywhere inside the enclosure are all reasons to have someone look. So is a fuse box, a main breaker rated at 100 amps or less, or a panel so full that the next circuit has nowhere to go. None of these mean the house is about to burn down, but each one is the electrical system telling you it has run out of room.

Why 200 Amps Is the Practical Standard

A 100-amp service was generous in 1985 and is tight today. A single Level 2 car charger can draw 40 to 50 amps on its own, and a heat pump, an electric range and a water heater will use most of what is left. Two hundred amps is what we install in almost every home now, because it leaves room for the things people add over the following ten years rather than forcing another upgrade. Where the existing service drop, meter base or grounding will not support it, we tell you that before the work starts, not after.

How a Panel Replacement Actually Goes

A Load Calculation First: We measure what the house actually draws and what you plan to add, rather than guessing from square footage. That determines the service size and whether the meter base and service entrance conductors also need replacing.

Permit and Utility Coordination: Every panel replacement needs a permit and an inspection, and the power has to be dropped and reconnected by Duke Energy. We file the permit, schedule the disconnect and meet the inspector, so the only thing on your calendar is the day itself.

One Day Without Power, Not Several: A straightforward panel swap is a single-day job, typically six to eight hours with the power off. If the meter base or service mast also has to change, plan on a longer day, and we will say so when we quote it.

Every Circuit Labeled and Tested: The new panel leaves with a legible directory, arc-fault and ground-fault protection where the code now requires it, and every circuit tested under load before we hand it back.

Inspection Passed Before We Invoice: The county or town inspector signs off before the job is closed out. If anything is corrected on inspection, that correction is ours, not an extra line on your bill.

Permits and Inspection

Permitting is not the same in every town we cover. Some towns run their own inspections department and others contract the work to the county, and each office has its own scheduling rhythm. We pull the permit, coordinate the utility disconnect and reconnect, and meet the inspector on site. You do not need to call the county, and you should be wary of any electrician who asks you to pull your own permit for a service change.

Get a Panel Assessment

Open the panel door, photograph the label and the breaker layout, and send it over. That one picture usually tells us the brand, the service size and how full the panel is.
