Signs a House Is a Rewiring Candidate
Two-prong outlets in most rooms. Cloth-insulated wiring visible in the attic or basement. A house from the late 1960s or early 1970s, when aluminum branch wiring was common, and with aluminum the story is the connections: the trouble shows up where the wire meets outlets, switches and splices, not in the middle of the run. Fuses instead of breakers. Extension cords doing permanent duty because the outlets are too few. An insurance carrier or home inspector asking pointed questions about knob-and-tube, aluminum or the fuse box. None of these mean the house is dangerous today. Rewiring is sold as all-or-nothing more often than it should be. Some houses genuinely need every circuit replaced. Others need the kitchen and bathroom circuits brought up to date, grounding corrected, and aluminum terminations properly treated, at a fraction of the cost. The assessment tells us which house yours is, and the quote you get reflects that answer, not the biggest version of the job. A rewire also frequently pairs with a panel upgrade, since a 60 or 100 amp service usually dates from the same era as the wiring. And while walls are open, it is the ideal time to add speaker, TV and Ethernet wiring in the same visit.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does an older house always need rewiring?
No. Cloth wiring that has gone brittle, knob and tube, aluminum branch wiring and repeated overheating are the reasons to rewire. Age alone is not.
Can you rewire without tearing out the walls?
Mostly. Crawlspaces and attics do most of the work. Some drywall patching is normal and we tell you where.
How long does a whole-house rewire take?
Usually a week to two weeks depending on size, in stages so you are not without power for the whole time.
What does it cost?
Whole-home rewiring runs $8,500 to $25,000 depending on the size of the house and the options. We quote it after walking the house.
Will the insurer care?
Insurers increasingly ask about knob and tube and aluminum wiring. A rewire with a permit and inspection is the paperwork they want.
Do you replace the panel at the same time?
Nearly always, because a rewired house on an old panel makes no sense. It is priced together.
