The Small Job That Is Never Just a Small Job

An outlet that has stopped holding a plug, a switch that needs a second push, a receptacle that is warm to the touch. These are the jobs people put off for a year and then mention in passing while we are there for something else.

 

They are worth doing properly, because the two most common causes are the two that matter. A back-stabbed connection, where the wire was pushed into a hole in the back of the device instead of wrapped around the screw, works loose over twenty years and starts heating. And a two-prong outlet means there is no ground, which is fine for a lamp and not fine for anything with a metal case or a circuit board in it.

 

Neither is dramatic. Both are cheap to fix and expensive to ignore.

Two-Prong Outlets and What They Actually Mean

A two-prong outlet means the circuit has no ground. That is fine for a lamp and not fine for anything with a metal case or a circuit board in it. It does not automatically mean a rewire: depending on what is in the wall, the options run from a GFCI at the head of the circuit to running a ground to that circuit only, and a full rewire is the last resort rather than the first quote.

GFCI and AFCI, in Plain Language

A GFCI protects a person from a shock, which is why it belongs at kitchen counters, in bathrooms, garages, laundry areas, outdoors and within six feet of a sink. An AFCI protects the house from a fire caused by an arcing wire, and it lives at the panel. Modern code wants both, in different places, and a GFCI that keeps tripping is usually doing its job on a circuit that is leaking current.

My house has two-prong outlets. Do I have to rewire?

Can you just add USB outlets?

Yes, and it is one of the more satisfying small jobs. They need a slightly deeper box, which we check first.

 

Is it worth doing the whole house at once?

If more than about six need doing, yes, on price alone.
