Everything electrical in your house comes in through one place: the weatherhead on the roof or the underground lateral, the riser, the meter base, then the main panel. That run is outside in the weather for decades and it is the part nobody looks at until something goes wrong.

 

When it goes wrong it goes wrong in a specific way. Flickering that no breaker explains. Lights that dim when the neighbors' air conditioning starts. A burning smell near the meter. Water in the panel after heavy rain. Those are the meter base, the riser or the service entrance cable, and no amount of work inside the panel fixes them.

The weatherhead, the riser, the service entrance cable and the meter base sit in the weather for decades. When one of them fails it shows up indoors as flickering that no breaker explains, lights that dim when a big load starts next door, a burning smell or discoloration at the meter, or water inside the panel after rain. Replacing breakers does not fix any of that, because the fault is upstream of the panel.

The meter has to come out for a meter base or service change, so the utility disconnects and reconnects. We book that, not you, with Duke Energy Progress or Wake Electric depending on the address, and we schedule the work around it so the power is off for hours, not days. The inspector signs the work off before the utility reconnects.

How a Service Upgrade Goes

We inspect the whole run: Weatherhead, drip loop, riser, meter base, service entrance cable, main lugs. A photo of each and a plain explanation of what we found.

We coordinate the disconnect: The utility pulls the meter and reconnects afterwards. We book that, not you, and we schedule the work around it so the power is off for hours, not days.

We replace what is actually failing: Sometimes that is the meter base alone. Sometimes it is the whole service. We quote what is needed, not the biggest job we can describe.

Permit and inspection: A service change is permitted work everywhere we go. The inspector signs it before the utility reconnects.

Grounding and bonding brought up to current code: New ground rods where required, bonding at the water and gas lines checked, surge protection fitted where you want it.

How long is the power off?

For most service changes, part of one day. We schedule the utility disconnect and reconnect so it is hours, not overnight.

 

Who deals with Duke Energy or Wake Electric?

We do. You will not be on hold with the utility.

 

My meter base is corroded but the panel is fine. Do I need both?

Not necessarily. We replace what is failing and leave what is not.

 

Overhead or underground: does it change anything?

It changes the parts and the price, not whether we can do it.

 

Does a service upgrade include a new panel?

Our complete service upgrade does. If you only need the outside parts, that is the meter base and riser job instead.

Meter base and riser replacement runs $900 to $2,200, depending on what is being replaced and whether the service is overhead or underground. A complete service upgrade to 200 amps is typically $3,285, permit included. Utility coordination is part of the job, not an extra.
