Why the Power Strip Is Not Enough
A good strip at the desk protects what is plugged into it and nothing else. It cannot protect the hardwired equipment, and it cannot stop a surge that arrives on the service before it reaches the room. We look at the panel first: A surge protector needs two breaker spaces and a short, straight run to the bus. If the panel is full, we tell you before we quote, not after.

We size it to the service: A 200 amp residential service and a 100 amp service want different devices. We fit what the panel actually needs.

Fitted at the panel, not at the outlet: The device goes on the main panel so everything downstream is behind it, including the circuits you cannot plug a strip into.

Permit and inspection where required: In Zebulon, Wendell, Knightdale and Rolesville that goes through Wake County Permits and Inspections. We pull it and meet the inspector.

Does a whole-house protector replace my power strips?
No, and anyone who tells you it does is overselling. The panel device takes the big hit; a good strip at the desk takes what is left. They work together.
How long does one last?
Until it has absorbed its rated energy, which could be two years or fifteen depending on what your line throws at it. That is what the status light is for.
Will it stop lightning?
A direct strike on the house is beyond any protector. Everything short of that, which is the overwhelming majority of surge damage, is what it is for.
Do I need two breaker spaces free?
Yes. If your panel is full we will tell you what that means before you commit to anything.
Does it need a permit?
In most of the jurisdictions we serve, yes. It is included in our price and we handle it.

What It Costs
Whole-house surge protection fitted on its own runs $289 to $589, depending on the device and whether the panel has room for it. It is already included at no extra charge with every 200 amp panel replacement we do, which is one of the reasons a panel replacement with us is a single number rather than a base price plus a list of extras. These figures are estimates from jobs we have done, and the exact price for your house comes from a free on-site estimate, in writing, before any work starts.
