Power Where the House Ends

A shed, a detached garage or a backyard workshop is only as useful as the power that reaches it. An extension cord across the lawn is not a supply, and a building delivered without wiring still needs a proper feed from the house. Sparkwise Electrical Inc wires sheds, detached garages, workshops, pool houses and other outbuildings that belong to a single-family home, in Raleigh, Zebulon and across Wake, Johnston, Durham, Orange, Harnett, Wilson, Wayne, Nash, Chatham (Fearrington, Pittsboro, Moncure, Bynum, Briar Chapel) and Franklin counties.

One Circuit or a Subpanel

A shed that needs a light and a couple of outlets can usually run on one dedicated circuit from the house. A workshop with power tools, a detached garage with a car charger, or a building with heat or air conditioning usually needs a subpanel, fed from the house by a properly sized feeder with four wires, a separate neutral and ground, and its own ground rod at the building. We work out which one your building needs from what you plan to run, not from the size of the building. We wire to the North Carolina Electrical Code that applies to your home.

What We Wire, and What We Do Not

We work on single-family detached homes, and that includes the outbuildings that belong to them and are used by the household. A building used to run a business, rented out on its own or standing on a separate lot is outside what we take on, and we tell you so on the first call rather than at the estimate.

How an Outbuilding Job Goes

Open trench with conduit running across a backyard toward a shed

01

What You Plan to Power: Lights, outlets, tools, heat, a car charger. That list decides between a single circuit and a subpanel, and we check that the house panel has room for it.

02

The Route From the House: We walk the path from the panel to the building and plan the run, overhead or underground, around what is already in the yard. For an underground run we can dig the trench as part of the job, or you can arrange the digging yourself, and either way we set the route and depth before work starts.

03

Permit and Inspection Handled: New wiring to an outbuilding is permitted work. We file the permit, book the inspection and meet the inspector.

04

Wired, Grounded and Tested: The feeder or circuit is run, the building gets its own grounding, outlets get the GFCI protection they need, and every circuit is tested before we hand it back.

05

Labeled and Explained: The new breaker is labeled in the house panel, and we show you where the building's power shuts off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a shed run on an extension cord?

No. A cord is made for temporary use. A building you use every week needs a permanent circuit, sized and protected for what it runs.

Do I need a permit to wire a shed or garage?

Yes. New wiring to an outbuilding is permitted work, and we file the permit and meet the inspector.

Does my house panel have room for it?

A load calculation and a look at the free spaces answer that, and both are part of the quote. If the panel is full, a subpanel or a panel upgrade may come first, and we say so before we quote.

Can you put a car charger in my detached garage?

Yes. A charger in a detached garage usually needs a feeder or subpanel sized for it. Our EV charger page covers that side of the job.

My shed company says the hookup is up to me. What do you need?

Where the building sits, how far it is from the house, a photo of your panel with the door open, and what you plan to run. Send those and we will set up the estimate.

Who digs the trench for an underground run?

We can, as part of the quoted job, or you can arrange it yourself. Either way we set the route and the depth before any digging starts, and where the inspector needs to see the trench open, we book that before it is filled.

Does the building need its own meter?

Usually not: most outbuildings are fed from the house panel. If yours needs its own service, we tell you at the estimate.

What It Costs

Every outbuilding is different, so this work is quoted after we see the site: where the building sits, how far it is from the panel, whether the run goes overhead or underground, and what you plan to power. For a sense of scale, a dedicated circuit runs $450 to $1,500 depending on distance, and a subpanel installation runs $850 to $2,500, as on our pricing page. These figures are estimates from jobs we have done, and your exact price is put in writing after an on-site estimate, free on quoted work, before any work starts. The price you approve is the price you pay.

What backs the work? A lifetime warranty on labor and workmanship, plus up to 15 years on materials.
