Getting from one to the other is an electrical project, not an accessory purchase, because a Level 2 charger can draw 40 to 50 amps, which is more than almost anything else in the house. What a home EV charger installation costs with us
A Level 2 charger installation on a short run from your panel is typically $985, permit included. If your panel needs more capacity for the charger, the EV charger plus a complete service upgrade together is typically $4,285, permit included. Both figures are estimates from jobs we have done, and the exact price for your house comes from an on-site estimate, free on quoted work. Most installations are done in a single visit.
Why a load calculation first? Sizing the circuit from a real load calculation, not a guess, is what keeps the charger fast and the panel safe. We do that on every quote, and the estimate is free on quoted work.

What Actually Decides the Install
Three things set the shape of an EV charger job. First, whether your panel has the capacity, which a load calculation answers, not a glance. Second, the distance from the panel to where the car parks, because the wire run is often more of the cost than the charger. Third, whether the charger should be hardwired or plug into a heavy-duty outlet. Some homes are ready today. Some need a circuit added. Some are better served by a panel upgrade first, and if that is the honest answer we say it before we quote, not after the charger is on the wall.

The Duke Energy Charger Prep Credit
Duke Energy runs a Charger Prep Credit that covers the electrical work behind a home charger. According to Duke it covers the conduit, wiring and outlets supplying the charger, panel upgrades and breaker installation, and the charger hardware itself. It does not cover permit fees, or mounting and commissioning the unit.
First, check who supplies your power. The credit is a Duke Energy program, so it is for Duke customers. Some homes around Zebulon, Wendell and the rest of eastern Wake are supplied by Wake Electric instead, and those are not eligible for the Duke credit. Look at your bill before you count on it.
As published by Duke in September 2026, the credit is up to $1,117 per charger for Duke Energy Progress customers and up to $1,133 per charger for Duke Energy Carolinas customers. Duke sets the amounts and the terms and they change, so read the current figures on duke-energy.com before you count on them.
If you are a Duke customer, there are two ways to get the credit. Sparkwise Electrical Inc is on Duke Energy's contractor list for the Charger Prep Credit, so under Duke's Contractor Credit Option the credit can be shown on our final bill as a discount on the qualifying work. Which utility do I have, and does it matter?

Yes, on a driveway post or an exterior wall, with the right enclosure rating.
What if I do not know which charger to buy yet?

When the Panel Has to Come First
A 100-amp service with an electric range, a heat pump and a dryer often has no honest room for a 50-amp charger. Load management devices can sometimes bridge the gap, and sometimes the right answer is the panel upgrade you were eventually going to need anyway.
