The cord that comes with an electric car plugs into a wall outlet and adds a few miles of range an hour. A hardwired Level 2 charger fills the battery overnight. Getting from one to the other is an electrical project, not an accessory purchase, because a Level 2 charger can draw 40 to 50 amps, which is more than almost anything else in the house. What a home EV charger installation costs with us
A Level 2 charger installation on a short run from your panel is $985, flat rate, permit included. If your panel needs more capacity for the charger, the EV charger plus a complete service upgrade together is $4,285, which is about $485 less than booking the two jobs separately. Most installations are done in a single visit.
Why a load calculation first? Sizing the circuit from a real load calculation, not a guess, is what keeps the charger fast and the panel safe. We do that on every quote, and the estimate is free on quoted work.

What Actually Decides the Install
Three things set the shape of an EV charger job. First, whether your panel has the capacity, which a load calculation answers, not a glance. Second, the distance from the panel to where the car parks, because the wire run is often more of the cost than the charger. Third, whether the charger should be hardwired or plug into a heavy-duty outlet. Some homes are ready today. Some need a circuit added. Some are better served by a panel upgrade first, and if that is the honest answer we say it before we quote, not after the charger is on the wall.

The Duke Energy Charger Prep Credit
Duke Energy runs a Charger Prep Credit program in North Carolina that can reimburse part of the cost of the wiring, panel work and charger for a home installation, and homeowners can apply after the work is completed. The program terms and amounts are set by Duke Energy and they change, so we flag it when we quote and point you at the current program page rather than promising a number here.

When the Panel Has to Come First
A 100-amp service with an electric range, a heat pump and a dryer often has no honest room for a 50-amp charger. Load management devices can sometimes bridge the gap, and sometimes the right answer is the panel upgrade you were eventually going to need anyway.
