Electrical Work in Wake Forest Homes

Sparkwise Electrical Inc works on single-family detached homes throughout Wake Forest. Our shop is in Zebulon, southeast of town, close enough that Wake Forest is a routine part of our week rather than an outlying trip. The town holds two kinds of housing, older homes near the historic center and a large amount of newer construction, and the electrical work each one needs is very different. Across the Franklin County line to the east we also serve Bunn.

What Wake Forest Homes Actually Need

Wake Forest has three kinds of house and we see all three in a normal week. Along North Main Street and the streets around the old college, the houses date from 1820 to the 1950s, and the Glen Royall Mill Village next to downtown was built from 1900 as four-room mill houses around a central chimney. Those homes have been added to for a century, and what we find is the layered result: a service that was upgraded once in the 1970s and never since, knob-and-tube or cloth wiring still live in an attic, two-prong receptacles, and a panel that has run out of room. The work there is careful and rarely as big as people fear.

Then there is everything built since the town grew from 30,117 people in 2010 to 47,601 in 2020: Heritage, begun in 2001, Traditions from the late 2000s, and the subdivisions filling in toward the Franklin County line. The wiring in those houses is fine. The capacity is not. A full 200 amp panel with no room for a car charger, a hot tub or a workshop circuit is the most common call we get from a Wake Forest house under twenty years old, and it is usually solved with a subpanel or a load-management device rather than a whole new service. The third kind is the house between the two, the 1980s and 1990s ranch or two-story with a builder-grade panel from one of the brands with a known defect history, and that one we want to look at before anything else is added to it.

Who Supplies the Power in Wake Forest

Wake Forest is unusual: three electric utilities serve the town. Wake Forest Power, the town's own utility since 1909, bills nearly 9,000 customers over 95 miles of overhead line. Duke Energy Progress and Wake Electric serve the rest, and Wake Electric's customer service center sits right downtown on South Franklin Street. The town keeps a map so you can look up which one you are on, and we check it before we quote, because it changes the job. On a service upgrade the disconnect and reconnect are booked with the utility that owns the meter. Wake Forest Power converts an overhead service to underground for $275 up to 150 feet, which is worth knowing if you are replacing a mast anyway. And if a storm pulls the mast or meter off the house, that part is the homeowner's to repair, and the town requires an electrical permit and inspection before it will restore power, which is exactly the kind of job we handle, from the permit to the final inspection. The Duke Energy Charger Prep Credit for EV charger wiring applies only to Duke Energy customers, so a Wake Forest Power or Wake Electric home does not get it; we tell you before you plan around it.

When Something Is Not Working Right

If a breaker keeps tripping, lights flicker, an outlet has gone dead or you notice a burning smell, that is a repair visit rather than quoted work, because the fault has to be found before anyone can honestly price the repair. Repair visits start with an $89 dispatch fee: we come out, go over the job with you and explain what needs to be done next. Diagnostic work and the repair are priced before they start, and the fee is not credited toward them. Estimates are free on quoted work such as panel upgrades, EV chargers, generators, rewires, new circuits and lighting.

How the Work Goes

Electrician reviewing finished electrical work with a homeowner, residential electrical services in Wake Forest NC

01

We Look Before We Quote: On quoted work we assess what the house actually needs and what the existing service can carry, so the price you get reflects the real job rather than a guess made from the driveway.

02

Permits and Inspections Handled: Where the work needs a permit we pull it and coordinate the inspection and any utility disconnect, so you are not left chasing the county or the power company yourself.

03

A Clear Schedule: We tell you which day the work happens and how long the power is off. Most residential jobs are finished in a single visit rather than stretched across a week.

04

Labeled and Tested: Circuits are labeled and tested before we leave, so the next person who opens that panel can see what everything does.

05

Backed After We Leave: Every job is backed by a lifetime warranty on labor and workmanship, plus up to 15 years on materials. Generator installations include the first year of maintenance at no charge.

Questions Wake Forest Homeowners Ask Us

Who inspects electrical work in Wake Forest?

The Town of Wake Forest Inspections Department, at Town Hall on South Brooks Street, for everything inside the town limits, including the part of town that lies in Franklin County. A permit is required for any electrical work here, and an inspection requested by 3 PM is done the next business day. We pull the permit and we meet the inspector.

Which power company am I on?

It depends on the street. Wake Forest Power serves a large part of town, Duke Energy Progress and Wake Electric serve other areas, and the town publishes a lookup map. We check before we price anything that needs a disconnect or that touches the meter.

A storm took the mast off my house. Who fixes that?

The homeowner does, from the weatherhead down, and the town will not reconnect until an electrician has repaired it, pulled the permit and passed inspection. Call or text us and we will get the mast, the meter base and the permit handled in the right order.

My house in Heritage has a full panel and I want an EV charger. Do I need a new panel?

Not always. A subpanel or a load-management device often solves it for a fraction of the cost. We look at the panel and the service before we tell you which, and we check whether the Duke charger credit applies to your address.

Do you charge to come out to Wake Forest?

Yes, for repairs: an $89 dispatch fee to come out, go over the job with you and explain what needs to be done next. Diagnostic work and the repair are priced before they start, and the fee is not credited toward them. Quoted work is free to estimate. The dispatch fee is the same anywhere in the ten counties we serve.

Who Inspects the Work in Wake Forest

Permits and inspections inside the Wake Forest town limits are handled by the Town of Wake Forest Inspections Department at Town Hall, 301 South Brooks Street, rather than by Wake County, and that includes the part of town across the Franklin County line. The town requires a permit for any electrical work, and an inspection requested by 3 PM is performed the next business day. On work that needs a permit, we pull it, we book the inspection and we are there to meet the inspector. We do not invoice a permitted job until it has passed. Rated 5.0 on Google and BBB accredited.
