Who handles the permit in Apex

Apex is one of the Wake County towns that runs its own inspections rather than handing them to the county. The Town of Apex takes single-trade electrical applications at its own permitting office and its own code enforcement officers carry out the field inspections. Wake County's permitting department serves a named list of towns and Apex is not on it.

That is good news for scheduling. Where a job in a county-inspected town is permitted by one office and inspected by another, an Apex job stays inside a single department from application to final. It is usually one schedule to work around instead of two.

We pull the permit, coordinate the utility disconnect and reconnect, and meet the inspector on site. You should not have to pull your own permit for a service change, and it is worth being wary of any electrician who asks you to.

A newer town, and the work reflects it

Apex has grown fast, and a large share of its housing is recent enough that the wiring is in good order. Modern panels, grounded circuits, arc-fault and ground-fault protection where the code called for it. So most of what we do here is adding capacity rather than repairing old work.

That means chargers, generators, subpanels for a finished garage or bonus room, hot tub and workshop circuits, and whole-home surge protection. The single most common call is a panel that was sized for the house as the builder delivered it and has since run out of room.

That last one catches a lot of people. A builder sizes the service for the house as built. Add a heat pump, an EV charger and a hot tub over a few years and a service that was comfortable at closing can be genuinely tight. Whether it still has room is a load calculation, not a guess, and it is cheaper to check before you buy the charger than after.

Closer to the older streets around the town center the list is different. Smaller services, aging panels, ungrounded two-prong outlets, and branch circuits that have been extended over the years until nothing quite matches the original design. None of that means a house is unsafe today, but the panel is usually the limiting factor on anything you want to add.

The $89 covers the visit and the diagnosis and is charged in addition to the repair. Most repairs come to $150 to $550 on top of that visit.
